Getting To and From Orkney
You can travel to and from the Scottish mainland by ferry or air.
Ferry services
- Gills Bay, Caithness to St Margaret’s Hope, Orkney (Pentland Ferries).
- Scrabster, Caithness to Stromness, Orkney (Northlink Ferries).
- Aberdeen to Kirkwall, Orkney (Northlink Ferries).
- There is also a passenger ferry from John O’Groats in Caithness to Orkney (John O'Groats Ferries).
Air Services
There are flights operated by Loganair and Flybe between Kirkwall and Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Sumburgh in Shetland.
Getting Around on Eday
General Travel
There is no daily public transport service on Eday – the best way to get around is by car or by bicycle. There are bicycles at the cottage for you to use. If you are walking, most people will stop and give you a lift.

J&J Transport offer a taxi and car hire service. They are based next to the Eday Pier and can be contacted on 01857 622 206.
Directions to Dale Cottage
Dale Cottage is approximately a 5 min drive from Eday Pier. Drive off the pier and up to the car park. Continue straight on, up past the post box for 300m, with the car park on your right and then take the first public road on the left. Dale Cottage is the first house on your left thereafter.
